Swatch MoonSwatch Rubber Straps Hit or Miss?

Swatch MoonSwatch Rubber Straps Hit or Miss?

Swatch has just launched a new range of straps for the Bioceramic Swatch x OMEGA MoonSwatch collection, aiming to give these iconic timepieces a fresh twist for 2025. But do these straps truly elevate the MoonSwatch experience, or do they miss the mark? Here's our take.

MoonSwatch Straps - What We Like

The stock MoonSwatch strap has always been a Marmite product, with some owners applauding its fit and nod to space heritage with a Velcro finish, while others have criticised its comfort, style and heavy branding. However, it’s clear that with the likes of MGBWATCHES, Horus, and Wristbuddys, specialising in 'third party' MoonSwatch straps, Swatch, now have their sights set on the MoonSwatch strap market.

Eleven straps have been released to match the original eleven MoonSwatches, and as a company specialising in MoonSwatch straps, we’ve spent a lot of time perfecting fit, finish, and feel, and at first glance, we think Swatch has done a commendable job with the colour combinations on offer following the launch of these new straps.

From the light blue and white rubber strap to the bold red and white option, these straps undoubtedly add a playful personality to a MoonSwatch. Each is tailored to its corresponding watch; for example, the Bordeaux and light grey pairing is clearly intended for your Mission to Pluto, while the orange and sand combination is designed for your Mission to Jupiter. These vibrant and versatile choices will allow MoonSwatch owners to experiment with styles that complement their watches.

However... in such a competitive space, with plenty of MoonSwatch strap options available and the Marmite loop finish of the stock strap, is this really what customers want?

What We Dislike Branding and Elevation Fall Short

While the colour palette is diverse, the branding and overall design feel quite underwhelming. With a whole market of MoonSwatch strap data out there, we’d expected more attention to detail and something with a real 'cool factor'. The straps, though functional with a quick release, perhaps lack the styling that could truly enhance the MoonSwatch. The branding is bold, with the Swatch X OMEGA logo printed at six o’clock, while the words 'MOONSWATCH' & 'SPEEDMASTER' runs across the top and bottom halves of the strap. But when we reference the 'cool factor' of a MoonSwatch, this new strap, sadly feels almost 'anti-cool'.

We’ve spent a full year talking to our customers, finding straps that elevate the MoonSwatch, and these seem to do the complete opposite. The typical MoonSwatch collector is likely to have a diverse range of watches—from Rolex to OMEGA to Cartier, and for a holiday or a non-serious day out, slapping on a MoonSwatch is a pretty cool choice. Perhaps you’ve got your Mission to the Moon on a striped NATO, a curved fit rubber strap, or even leather for more formal outings. Does the MoonSwatch customer really want 'MOONSWATCH' branding plastered all over their strap? As personal lovers of MoonSwatches, we certainly don’t, and I think Swatch have missed the point of a strap change here.

Additionally, the elevation of the MoonSwatch through these straps feels minimal. Straps are meant to enhance the look and feel or functionally improve the watch. While they offer visual variety, these new straps  don’t transform the watch into something more compelling or upscale, they make the watch look cheap and almost childish.

For a watch line that thrives on its connection to space exploration and aspirational themes, we feel these straps really could have pushed the boundaries further.

Final Thoughts - A Mixed Bag

Swatch's new MoonSwatch straps are a step in the right direction for customisation, but they don't quite reach the stars. The vibrant colours will undoubtedly be hit, offering a way to personalise your watch to match your mood or style. However, the lack of thought, and bold branding choices makes this launch more of a safe bet than a ground breaking innovation.

If you're looking for a quick and easy way to refresh your MoonSwatch, these straps are worth exploring.
