A New MoonSwatch Incoming? Swatch’s Teaser Sparks Speculation on a 1965 Throwback

A New MoonSwatch Incoming? Swatch’s Teaser Sparks Speculation on a 1965 Throwback

With the three year anniversary of the MoonSwatch fast approaching on March 26th Swatch has dropped a cryptic teaser sparking intense speculation. Could this new release be a tribute to 1965 one of the most pivotal years in Omega Speedmaster history?

Could this hint at an entirely new Swatch collaboration with a different brand? We believe it is more likely another MoonSwatch, and here is what we have gathered from the teaser!

1965 A Defining Year for the Speedmaster

An Omega Speedmaster watch with a black dial, tachymeter bezel, and Velcro strap placed on top of a historical NASA document related to the Apollo program. The document contains handwritten notes and official stamps, including an 'INSPECTED – ACCEPTABLE FOR USE' marking, signifying the Speedmaster’s qualification for space missions. The watch is positioned prominently, emphasizing its association with NASA and space exploration. While Swatch's teaser post features a variety of intriguing images, one thing stands out the closing reel prominently displaying the year 1965! This was the year NASA officially certified the Omega Speedmaster for space missions. This milestone cemented the Speedmaster as the first and only watch approved for all manned spaceflights and Extravehicular Activities EVA. From that point forward the Speedmaster became an essential part of an astronaut's kit ultimately earning its legendary status as the Moonwatch. If Swatch is referencing this we could be looking at a MoonSwatch designed around the earliest NASA approved Speedmasters possibly taking cues from models like the CK2998 105.002 or 105.003.

Imagine a Swatch MoonSwatch 1965 Edition—a tribute to the year the Omega Speedmaster was NASA certified for space. A bioceramic case mimicking brushed steel, a matte black dial with vintage patina lume, and classic Alpha hands nod to the 1965 models. A long Velcro strap, inspired by astronaut gear, wraps around the wrist, while a subtle "Flight-Qualified by Swatch for All Earthbound Missions" engraving adds a playful touch.

A Le Mans Connection

On his left wrist, he is wearing an Omega Speedmaster watch with a stainless steel bracelet. The background is slightly blurred, suggesting a motorsport environment. Some Swatch enthusiasts in the comments have pointed to an automotive twist. In 1965 Belgian racing driver Willy Mairesse wore an Omega Speedmaster at the 24 Hours of Le Mans raising speculation about a racing inspired MoonSwatch. The teaser itself features black and white footage of a Ford GT40 racing at Le Mans further fuelling the idea that this release could pay tribute to motorsport history. Some have even speculated about a potential partnership with Ford or Ferrari tying into Ferrari's 1965 Le Mans victory its last until 2023.

Who Was Willy Mairesse?

Willy Mairesse was a Belgian racing driver known for his aggressive style in Formula One and endurance racing. He started competing at 25, winning the Liège Rome Liège rally in 1955 and securing strong finishes at Reims and Nürburgring. Ferrari signed him in 1960, where he had mixed results in F1 but excelled in endurance racing, finishing second at Le Mans in 1962 and winning the Targa Florio.

Imagine a MoonSwatch Le Mans Edition—a tribute to the speed, precision, and legacy of motorsport in 1965. Perhaps Inspired by Willy Mairesse, this edition could blend racing heritage with Swatch’s playful spirit. A sleek black & white bio ceramic case mirroring the Ford GT40’s bold aesthetics, while a perforated rally-style strap nods to classic driving gloves. The dial featuring vintage racing numerals, a subtle checkered flag motif, and an orange accented seconds hand …!

Could We See a "Premoon" MoonSwatch

The Omega logo and 'Speedmaster Professional' text are displayed below the 12 o’clock position. The watch has a classic design with aged patina on the hour markers and hands.Another theory floating among collectors is that Swatch may be gearing up for a Premoon Landing MoonSwatch a tribute to the Speedmasters worn in space before the famous 1969 moon landing. This would make perfect sense as a 60th anniversary nod to the Speedmaster's first major tests in 1964 and 1965 before NASA made it their official choice.

Imagine a MoonSwatch Premoon Edition—a tribute to the Speedmasters that ventured into space before the moon landing. This edition could revive the early astronaut worn designs with a clean, vintage inspired dial, faded patina lume, and a dot-over-90 tachymeter. A slim bioceramic case to mirror the tool watch aesthetics of the 1960s, while a Velcro strap echoes those worn on early NASA missions. A subtle engraving marks the 60th anniversary of the Speedmaster’s first NASA tests, celebrating the watch’s journey before it became the Moonwatch.

Visual Clues in the Teaser

The Swatch teaser is packed with intriguing imagery that may hint at the inspiration behind this release:

  • Black and white aesthetic - Possibly symbolising the classic era of the 1960s?
  • A cassette tape - A nostalgic nod to the technology and culture of the time?
  • Japanese businesspeople - Could suggest an influence from Japan's role in 1960s watchmaking or racing history?
  • 850 AM or PM - A specific time reference that might hold significance?
  • The words 1965 prominently displayed Cementing the year as a focal point of the release?
  • A Ford GT40 at Le Mans - A strong hint at motorsport heritage and a potential racing themed MoonSwatch?
