If you’re a fan of the Omega x Swatch MoonSwatch collection, you’ll know that it has been nothing short of stellar since its debut. Every release has taken us on a new journey through space and time. Today, a fresh clue has appeared in the Daily Telegraph [UK Newspaper], sparking speculation across the watch community. Could this be the next MoonSwatch release? Or perhaps something entirely new?
In a cryptic full page ad, The Daily Telegraph published the mysterious message; “And Yet It Moves – Galileo. Coined in 1633. Possibly said around November 2, Perhaps.” While there’s no clear indication of who is behind this, the style and typeface bear a striking resemblance to previous Swatch MoonSwatch teasers, such as those for the Snoopy Moonphase and the Blancpain Ocean of Storms. Could this be a hint at the next Swatch x Omega release, or is something else on the horizon?
Swatch x Omega MoonSwatch, a Timeline of Ground breaking Launches
Before diving into the latest speculation, let's take a look at the monumental journey of the Swatch x Omega MoonSwatch collaboration. Here’s a quick recap of all their launches, in chronological order:
March 2022 – Original MoonSwatch Collection. This was the start of it all. A bold partnership between Swatch and Omega, reimagining the iconic Speedmaster Professional in bioceramic form, featuring colours and designs inspired by planets and celestial bodies like Mission to the Moon, Mission to Mars, Mission to Mercury, Mission on Earth, and Mission to Saturn. This initial MoonSwatch release shook the watch world, and the MoonSwatch models have been iconic ever since.
March 2023 – Mission To The Moon Moonshine Gold. Next came the MoonSwatch Mission to the Moon with a twist, an exclusive year long version featuring a Moonshine Gold plated seconds hand. Released in limited quanties around full moon dates, it resonated with collectors who followed lunar cycles, marking another innovative addition to the Swatch x Omega MoonSwatch collection.
May/April 2024 – Mission To MoonPhase Snoopy New & Full Moon. The beloved beagle made his debut in the MoonSwatch series, celebrating NASA’s Silver Snoopy Award that Omega won for their contributions to the Apollo missions. Snoopy MoonSwatch became an instant favourite, combining style and storytelling.
June 2024 – Mission On Earth Collection. These three stunning releases brought new energy to the MoonSwatch line. Mission to Lava evoked the fiery power of volcanic landscapes, Mission to the Desert offered a cool, sandy palette inspired by Mars’ surface, and Polar Lights introduced an ethereal design inspired by the beauty of auroras, quickly becoming a fan favourite. August 2024 – Mission To The SuperBlue Moonphase. Taking inspiration from rare Blue Moon occurrences, this release quickly became a must have. Only sold in Swatch stores between 1st-19th August in limited quantities, in celebration of the 2024 Super Blue Moon.
But it’s not just about new designs. The MoonSwatch has evolved technologically too, first as a Chronometer, then as a Moonphase, and most recently as a Pulsometer. Each innovation has showcased Swatch’s dedication to pushing boundaries. Additionally, the series has seen improvements to the scratch resistance of the glass, making these timepieces more durable without compromising on their iconic look. And who knows? We’d love to see a Chronoscope in the near future, adding even more complexity to this already dynamic series!
Now, with this cryptic Galileo Newspaper teaser, could we be looking at a new Galileo inspired Swatch or something even more profound? Could the next Swatch x Omega MoonSwatch release be close, and how is Galileo’s secret tied to it?
“And Yet It Moves”: A Cosmic Connection?
The phrase “And Yet It Moves” is famously attributed to Galileo, the father of modern science, who is said to have muttered it after being forced by the Inquisition to recant his claim that the Earth moves around the Sun. Could this be a teaser for a new Swatch x Omega MoonSwatch model inspired by Galileo’s discoveries?
After all, Galileo observed the moons of Jupiter – Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto. With four MoonSwatch watches recently launched online in the USA and China [Mission to Earth, Mission to the Sun, Mission to the Moon, and Mission to Mars] this seems like more than a coincidence.
Could Swatch be setting the stage for a homage to the four Galilean moons of Jupiter? Another 'spin off' in the same vein as the Mission On Earth Series. Imagine a Galileo inspired MoonSwatch featuring colours reflecting the unique qualities of these moons.
- Io: Known for its extreme volcanic activity, instead of another fiery colour like the Mission to Lava, we might see a sulphur yellow or bright gold design, reflecting the moon’s distinct surface covered in sulfuric deposits, making it one of the most unique-looking moons in the solar system.
- Europa: With its icy surface, a cool white or pale blue would capture the moon’s frozen beauty and the potential for life beneath its surface.
- Ganymede: The largest moon in the solar system, perhaps a metallic grey or deep blue, symbolising its vast size and geological complexity.
- Callisto: With its heavily cratered surface, a dark brown or rocky grey design could evoke the rugged, ancient appearance of this moon.
Or could the new MoonSwatch be Sun & Earth related, celebrating the mechanics of planetary orbits? A tribute to Galileo’s revolutionary heliocentric discoveries could see a golden Sun inspired watch paired with a green or blue Earth themed counterpart.
Whatever comes next, it’s clear that Swatch may be preparing something new.. Perhaps we’re about to see an entire collection dedicated to Galileo and his celestial observations, marking yet another chapter in the ever expanding MoonSwatch universe.
Possible Release on November 2?
The date “November 2, Perhaps” stands out as a potential launch date. Why? It’s close to the full moon, which, as we’ve seen with the Moonshine Gold series, often aligns with Swatch's release strategies. More intriguingly, November 2 falls within a period of significant celestial events this year, making it a prime candidate for an astronomy themed Swatch x Omega MoonSwatch release.
Given that Galileo’s work revolutionised our understanding of the Sun & Earth's relationship, we might see another timepiece inspired by this cosmic duo. The Mission to Earth and Mission to the Sun pieces already exist, but could Swatch have something else in the works that ties these themes together? Perhaps a tribute to the heliocentric model or the four moons of Jupiter?
